The president that day October 2, 1958 was\u00a0S\u00e9kou Tour\u00e9 who famously said &#8220;We prefer poverty in liberty than riches in slavery.&#8221; Guinea was one of the early nations to proclaim its independence following\u00a0Ghana in March 1957. The people of Guinea celebrate and honor this day remembering their ancestors that fought and gave their lives to be a free nation.
